The Shivalinga installed in Baijnath Dham is also called Kamnalinga. According to ancient stories, Ravana, the king of Lanka, performed hard penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with Ravana’s penance, God asked him to ask for a boon, and Ravana said that he wanted to take him with him to Lanka. Hearing this, all the gods got upset and went to Lord Brahma and said that if Lord Shiva went to Lanka with Ravana, then how would the creation work? After this, Lord Brahma asked Lord Shiva to think carefully and grant him the boon. On this, Lord Shiva told Ravana that if you want to take me to Lanka, then take me, but I have one condition. Lord Shiva told Ravana that wherever I touch the land, I will be established there. Ravana agreed to this. God took the form of a Shivalinga. After this, Ravana was carrying Shivalinga. During this time, Lord Shiva aroused the desire of Laghushanka in Ravana. After tolerating for a long time, Ravana started doubting the Shivalinga by handing it to a shepherd. At the same time, the Lord increased his weight, and due to this, the shepherd shouted to Ravana that he could no longer carry this Shivalinga. Ravana could not listen because he was busy thinking.

Here the shepherd placed the Shivalinga on the ground. When Ravana returned, he could not lift the Shivling despite many efforts. Then Ravana understood God’s act and became extremely angry. According to the story, after that, Brahma, Vishnu, and other gods came and worshipped that Shivalinga, and after seeing Lord Shiva, they installed the Shivalinga at the same place. Since then, Mahadev resides in Devghar in the form of Kamna Linga. Our Deoghar holiday packages allow you to explore the myriad sights and sounds of this mysterious destination.
